Intel RealSense D456 Depth Camera for Rugged WideFOV 3D Scanning and Tracking
Shopping information
TheIntel RealSense D456is an IP65-rated, long-range stereo depth camera designed for rugged outdoor and industrial environments. Built on the same provenD450 active stereo depth moduleas the D455 series, the D456 adds a fully sealedIP65 enclosureand an integrated6-axis IMUto deliver reliable 3D perception in conditions where standard cameras would fail rain, dust, outdoor sunlight, or high-humidity factory floors. With a95 mm stereo baseline, it achieves sub-2% depth error at 4 metres and reaches up to6 metresin range, making it the go-to depth sensor for outdoor robotics, autonomous vehicles, and any deployment requiring consistent performance under the elements.
The D456 featuresthree Global Shutter sensors two for depth and one for RGB ensuring motion-free image capture even on fast-moving platforms such as drones and AMRs. The RGB camera delivers up to1280 800 @ 30 fpswith a wide90 65 FOV, co-registered with the depth stream for accurate RGB-D fusion. A sealedUSB-C 3.1 Gen 1 connectorhandles both power and data through a single cable, eliminating external power supplies and simplifying cable routing on mobile robots. The onboardIntel RealSense Vision Processor D4 Board V3handles all depth computation on-camera, keeping host CPU load minimal.
Software compatibility is universal across the RealSense ecosystem: the open-sourceIntel RealSense SDK 2.0 (librealsense)supports Python, C++, C#, ROS, and ROS 2, with pre-built packages available forWindows 10/11,Ubuntu 18.04/20.04/22.04, andmacOS. The D456 is the ideal depth camera for outdoor robot navigation, autonomous surveillance systems, agricultural automation, and any 3D scanning project where weather or dust resistance is non-negotiable.

FAQ
1. What makes the D456 different from the D455 and D455F?
The D456 is theruggedised IP65 variantof the D455 family. Key differences: (1)IP65 sealed enclosure dust-tight and water-jet protected, vs. the D455/D455F which have no IP rating. (2)~159 gvs. ~133 g for the D455/D455F slightly heavier due to the reinforced enclosure. (3)D456 does NOT include an IR Pass Filter(unlike the D455F); it uses standard depth lenses without the 750 nm filter. (4) The D456 uses the same D450 depth module and 95 mm baseline as the D455, so depth accuracy and range are identical.
2. Is the D456 suitable for permanent outdoor installation?
Yes. The D456’sIP65 enclosureand sealed USB-C connector are specifically designed for outdoor and semi-permanent installations. It can withstand rain, dust, high humidity, and water splashes from any direction. For direct sunlight or extreme temperature environments, additional shading or housing may be beneficial to protect the RGB lens from direct glare and to stay within the camera’s operating temperature range.
3. What is the effective depth range of the D456?
The D456 operates reliably between~0.52 m and 6 m. Like the D455, it uses a95 mm stereo baselinethat achieves<2% depth error at 4 m. Range may vary slightly with surface reflectivity and ambient IR lighting, but the IP65-sealed optics maintain consistent performance in dusty or humid conditions where un-sealed cameras would see degraded depth quality.
4. Does the D456 include an IMU, and how is it used?
Yes. The D456 integrates a6-axis IMU(3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope) that streams at approximately200250 Hz. IMU data is accessible via the RealSense SDK and is commonly used for: (1)inertial odometryin SLAM pipelines (e.g. VIO with RTAB-Map or ORB-SLAM3), (2)motion compensationto correct depth data for camera shake, and (3)pose and tilt estimationfor navigation and stabilisation. The IMU is especially valuable for mobile robots, drones, and any platform that experiences vibration or rapid motion.
5. Is the D456 compatible with ROS and ROS 2?
Yes. Intel provides the open-sourcerealsense-rospackage for both ROS 1 (Noetic) and ROS 2 (Humble / Iron / Jazzy). The D456 publishes depth, colour, point cloud, and IMU topics directly, making it immediately compatible with Nav2, RViz, MoveIt 2, and other standard ROS stacks. The same Python and C++ librealsense wrappers used for D455/D455F work without modification on the D456.
6. Can the D456 be powered from USB alone?
Yes. The D456 is entirelybus-poweredover USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, consuming approximately~2.5 Wunder typical operation. No external power supply is required. For IP65-rated installations, use a sealed IP65 USB cable and connector to maintain the enclosure’s ingress protection rating through the entire cable run.
7. How does the D456 compare to the D455F for outdoor use?
Foroutdoor deployment, the D456 is the clear choice due to itsIP65 rating. The D455F has no enclosure rating and is more susceptible to dust and water ingress. However, the D455F has the advantage of itsIR Pass Filter(750 nm), which reduces false depth detections from reflective surfaces a consideration for environments with glass, polished metal, or strong glare. Choose theD456for pure weather resistance; choose theD455Ffor environments where optical clarity and reflection elimination are the primary concern.
8. What platforms does the RealSense SDK support?
The open-sourcelibrealsense SDK 2.0supportsWindows 10/11,Ubuntu 18.04/20.04/22.04, andmacOS. Language wrappers include Python, C++, C#, Java, and MATLAB. ROS/ROS 2 packages (realsense-ros) are available separately. The Intel RealSense Viewer is a ready-to-run GUI for device testing and stream preview without any coding.
